The life and work of the famous botanist, corresponding member of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences, Ivan Ivanovich Karyagin, has been connected with the study of Azerbaijan and its flora since 1923. In 1923-1932, he worked in the higher schools of Baku and Ganja and rose from the laboratory assistant to the position of assistant professor of the Department of Botany. In 1932, I.I. Karyagin was invited to work in the botanical department of the Azerbaijan branch of the Transcaucasian branch of the AS of the USSR. In 1946, he created the herbarium laboratory and headed it from that year until the end of his life.

    I.I. Karyagin conducted extensive research on medicinal plants and in 1946 received the title of candidate of biological sciences in this field. In 1950-1961, I.I. Karyagin started the preparation and organization of the 8-volume book "Флора Азербайджана", and he was the editor of all volumes, and at the same time, he was one of the leading authors involved in the organization of "Flora". In 1952, the book "Flora of Absheron" edited by him was published.

    I.I. Karyagin is the only candidate of sciences who was elected a corresponding member of AS of the Republic of Azerbaijan in 1958 for his services in the field of botany.

    I.I.Karyagin became a member of the All-Union Botanical Society.
