05.04.2017

On April 3, the founder of algological science in Azerbaijan, corresponding member of ANAS, Professor Ninel Israfil gizi Garayeva died at the age of 85.

She was born in 1932 in the city of Baku. After graduating from the biological faculty of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov in 1955, she entered the postgraduate course of the Institute of Botany of ANAS in 1957. Under the guidance of an outstanding diatomologist of the 20th century, Dr.Sc. A.I.Proshkina-Lavrenkova worked on her Ph.D. thesis. In 1961 she defended her Ph.D. thesis on "Benthic diatoms of the western coast of the Caspian Sea" at the Kharkov State University, in 1975 at the Institute of Botany (Leningrad) of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR - the doctoral thesis "Diatom algae of the benthos of the Caspian Sea".

As a result of the conducted research, the composition of plant flora was analyzed, the morphological and ultrastructural description of 175 species found in the Caspian Sea, a row, a class, 2 genera, 9 species was studied for the first time, and their distribution and autocology were studied. This research work is considered a fundamental work in the study of the diatoms of the Caspian Sea.

As a result of many years of research by Professor N. Garayeva, characteristic features of the contemporary Caspian flora were established, and a hypothesis about its production and development, approved in experimental form, was put forward. Developed and applied an environmentally friendly method to control bioside, which prevents the formation of algae in the waters of the Caspian Sea.

A new genus of diatoms was named after Karayevia Round et Bukht (Round, Bukhtiyarova "Four new genera based on Achnanthes (Achnanthium) together with a re-definition of Achnanthium", Diatom Research, 1999, vol. 11). The results achieved by the scientist were repeatedly included in the number of important achievements of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and the Academy of Sciences of the AzSSR. She was the author of more than 115 scientific papers.

By order of the President of the country was awarded the medal "Tereggi", as well as medals "Veteran of Labor", the sign "Honored worker of socialist competition", Honorary diplomas and diplomas of the National Academy of Sciences and other structures.

The memory of Ninel Garayeva will always live in the hearts of those who knew her!

Allah rehmet elesin!
