ANAS opened the International School of Gerontology and Geriatrics

ANAS main building by the joint support of the International Institute on Ageing, United Nations-Malta, Azerbaijan Society of Gerontologists opened an international school of gerontology and geriatrics on November 13.

Opening the event, Academician-Secretary of ANAS Department of Biological and Medical Sciences, Academician Ahliman Amiraslanov emphasized the great importance of the new school in terms of achieving new successes in the field of geriatrics and gerontology in the country.

It was noted that, the school provides for the development of knowledge on the fundamental foundations of the relevant sphere, demographic aspects of aging, the problems of older people in countries in transition and the provision of medical and social assistance. The goal of the multidisciplinary education program is to encourage each student to actively participate in the discussions and deep assimilation of the proposed material.

A.Amiraslanov noted that, gerontological research is one of the priority directions of the Azerbaijani science for the next 10-15 years. At present, a number of institutes and organizations of ANAS together with local and foreign partners with the support of the Science Development Foundation under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan are implementing a 5-year research program to study the physiological and molecular genetic mechanisms of longevity.

The scientist noted the importance of preparing state programs aimed at improving the quality of life and active longevity, and providing for the prevention and treatment of diseases that arise with age as a result of the use of modern technologies. The academician stressed that the Society of Gerontologists of Azerbaijan, established with the support of ANAS and the medical community of the country at the beginning of this year, faces important tasks in this direction.

ANAS Director of the Institute of Physiology, Doctor of Biological Sciences Ulduz Hashimova, spoke about the importance of the functioning of the new school. Highly appreciating this institution from the point of view of combining representatives of organizations in the field of gerontology, she expressed her confidence that the school will give positive results for the state.

Then, were listened reports of the Director of the International Institute of Ageing, United Nations Malta, Professor Marvin Formosa on "The main concepts in social gerontology", main consultant of the Center for European Policy and Social Security Studies of Austria Alexander Sidorenko on "Main demographic trends in the Commonwealth of Independent States", the first deputy director of the Autonomous non-commercial organization "Scientific Research Medical Center" Gerontology ", Head of the Department of Therapy, Geriatrics and anti-aging medicine ,Russia, Professor Andrey Ilnitsky "Ageing in the modern world: people need to know".
