Institute of Botany conducts international research on the protection of rare plants growing in Azerbaijan

Integrated into the international scientific community to address issues related to contemporary calls in the field of climate change and loss of biological diversity, ANAS Institute of Botany conducts joint research with foreign partners. One example of this activity is the “Biodiversity Endangered Hot Spot Program”, which is being implemented in partnership with the Kew Royal Botanic Gardens Millennium Seed Bank Partnership (England). The global environmental changes that have taken place over recent years pose a threat to the existence of Azerbaijan’s unique vegetation cover. Intensive anthropogenic activities (oil production, recreation, expansion of infrastructure) led to the formation of “red” critical zones, which, in turn, poses a great threat to the extinction of certain plant species. It should be noted that the flora of the republic is rich in valuable species of medicinal, food and ornamental, as well as endemic and relic plants.
