16.09.2022

The initial botanist expedition was carried out in the surrounding areas of Shusha and Fuzuli cities located in the Karabakh region of the Republic of Azerbaijan, with the participation of the general director of the Institute of Botany, professor Sayyare Ibadullayeva, leading scientific workers of the Ethnobotany laboratory, associate professor, Ph.D. in biology Elman Yusifov, and Ph.D. in biology Nuri Movsumova. The purpose of the expedition is to assess the biological diversity of Shusha and the surrounding areas, which have been under Armenian occupation for nearly 30 years, including the assessment of the damage caused to the vegetation by the invaders, monitoring the current floristic situation, as well as the search for species that are intended to be included in the third edition of the "Red Book" of the Republic of Azerbaijan, determination of the range and limiting factors, monitoring of development trends of individuals within populations.

During the expedition, the outskirts of Shusha city, Jidir plain, Dashalti and Topkhana forest areas were inspected with the participation of ANAMA employees. Forest vegetation, meadow vegetation around the forest, and rock vegetation were studied in the area. In the low mountainous and foothill areas of the region, the development of meadows and xerophytic bushes was observed in place of the forests destroyed by the invaders. GPS data of plant samples collected from the studied areas were recorded and herbarized on site.

Locations of geophyte plants (vicinity of Isa spring, Dashalti,  -  Ophrys caucasica Woronow ex Grossh, Gagea glacialis C.Koch., Tulipa karabachensis Grossh.; Limodorum abortivum (L.) Sw, Galanthus caucasica (Baker) Grossh., Quruçay, Horadiz-Tulipa schmidtii Fomin., Crocus adami J.Gay., Scilla caucasica Miscz.)  collected from the area and kept in the herbarium of the Institute of Botany were determined.

It should be noted that the state is taking important measures to develop the agricultural sector in the lands liberated from occupation. In a short time, the creation of grain fields, which are the leading branches of agriculture, as well as hazelnut plantations in order to restore forestry in the Shusha region and surrounding areas, is highly commendable.
