An expedition to Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur was organized under the joint initiative of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Institute of Botany. The purpose of the expedition was to study biodiversity in the liberated territories and monitor plants using comparative morphological, geographical and areological methods. With the participation of the head of the herbarium department, Parvana Karakhani, junior researcher Shahla Mirzayeva and employees of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, extensive monitoring was carried out in Jabrayil, Zangilan, Fuzuli, Gubadli regions and surrounding villages. Based on the initial monitoring, it was found that 10 thousand hectares of forest areas were looted, the natural landscape and biological diversity of the region were greatly damaged, and more than 100 natural monuments were deliberately destroyed as a result of the environmental terrorism committed by the Armenians over a period of 30 years. More than 20 plant samples were collected from the studied areas and handed over to the fund for the purpose of enriching the Herbarium fund.
During the researches, Juniperus foetidissima, Punica granatum, Platanus orientalis, which are included in the Red Book, as well as Ficus carica, which is a relict species, were found. Botanists are planning to re-examine Tulipa shmidtii, Platanthera chlorantha, Iris caucasica, Scilla caucasica, Galanthus caucasica, Pulsatilla violacea etc., which are included in the Red Book of Zangezur region, in the early spring.
