Specialists from foreign countries are interested in ethnobotanical research conducted in Azerbaijan

Zeyuan Wang, member of the task force of indigenous and traditional food systems and Nutrition under the International Union of Nutritional Sciences, the Global hub of FAO, PhD candidate of the Department of Social and Behavioral Health Sciences of the University of Toronto was at the Institute of Botany, MSE RA.

During the meeting with doctor of biological sciences, professorSayyaraIbadullayeva, general director of the Institute of Botany, MSE RA the guest was given extensive information about the activity direction of the Institute, conducted ethnobotanical research, and international projects.

Before the visit, Zeyuan Wang had discussions with professorSayyaraIbadullayeva about the use of plants by ethnic groups living in the Republic of Azerbaijan for a long time. While informing about the purpose of his research, he said that he is conducting research on topics such as the use of plants in local and traditional food systems among local communities and ethnic groups, the interaction and spiritual connection between people and plants, and the impact of plants on human health. Based on the map and its legend about the settlements of ethnic groups compiled by professor S. Ibadullayeva, he said that during the visit he met with ethnic groups in Lankaran, Zagatala, Guba and other regions and conducted a survey among them.

Professor S. Ibadullayeva gave detailed information about the places where the most ethnic groups live in Azerbaijan, the food and medicinal plants they use for health, the effects of climate change on plants, the mutual relations between plants and people, and other topics based on Zeyuan Wang’s questions.

Expressing his satisfaction with the meeting, the guest emphasized that the Institute of Botany has wide opportunities for cooperation. Possibilities of conducting joint research and expanding scientific cooperation relations were discussed.

At the end, samples of medicinal plants collected during ethnobotanical research were presented to the guest.
