The lack of fundamental, systematic research of Azerbaijani forests using modern scientific methods, botanical, taxonomic, dendrological, forestry and other approaches since the late 1980s, and the fact that scientific schools and scientific heritage formed over many years in the field of forestry are in danger of being destroyed, necessitates the establishment of the Forestry Department at the Institute of Botany. Note that the Institute previously had such a department, and our prominent scientists, such as Academician Ibrahim Safarov, played an exceptional role in the study of Azerbaijani forests from various aspects.
The Director General noted the following among the main objectives of the Forestry Department planned to be established at the Institute of Botany:
- Study the impact of global climate change and anthropogenic factors on forest ecosystems;
- To analyze the adaptation patterns of resistant species under conditions of technogenic pollution;
- To study the current state of forests in the liberated territories and initiate restoration activities;
- To study the productivity and use of wild fruits distributed in the forests of Azerbaijan;
- To analyze the current state of endemic, relict and rare species of Azerbaijani dendroflora, determine their status, and develop conservation measures;
- To analyze the causes of the recent aridification observed in the foothill forest belts, the thinning of valuable species in the middle belts, their replacement with less valuable species, the lowering of the boundary in the upper belts, and therefore the successional changes occurring in other plant formations and biogeocenoses, the role of biotic and abiotic anthropogenic factors, and to explore ways out.
"We have experienced scientists who will work in the Forestry Department planned to be established at the Institute of Botany." "The directions of activities of departments and laboratories will be re-evaluated, and proposals will be prepared and submitted to the Ministry of Science and Education to achieve the main goal set," said Professor Sayyara Ibadullayeva.
