Rare plants listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Azerbaijan are under threat; the population of geophyte species is declining rapidly.

The professor noted that in recent years, serious declines have been observed in the populations of some rare and valuable plant species in Azerbaijan. In particular, the uncontrolled collection of geophyte plants is causing their natural habitat range to shrink, creating a risk of complete extinction in the future.

Observations in the field of botany show that a number of geophyte plants, which are collected in early spring and sold in markets, are no longer as widespread in nature as before, due to high public interest in them. Among these species, Puschkinia (known locally as "eleyaz") holds a special place. Both its decorative appearance and its use for food purposes lead to its excessive collection.

The expert states that another endangered species is Rheum ribes (known locally as "ushgun"). This rare species is mainly distributed in the high mountainous areas of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. The mass collection of the plant's young shoots for food in spring disrupts its flowering and seed-production processes. As a result, the plant loses its natural reproductive capacity, and its population decreases year by year.

The scientist emphasized that in order to make efficient use of plant resources, the biological characteristics of each species must be taken into account. While the collection of a certain portion of some wild fruits may be permitted, it is advisable that only a very small portion of rare and limited-distribution plants be harvested. Otherwise, the recovery of these species becomes difficult, and biodiversity suffers serious damage.

According to our interviewee, individuals who collect plants from nature should research in advance information regarding collection rules, the conservation status of species, and their recovery. This information is widely reflected in scientific articles, electronic resources, and botanical research. The protection of rare plants is the shared responsibility not only of state institutions but of society as a whole. Strengthening ecological responsibility and awareness-raising efforts in the use of natural resources will help ensure that geophyte plants and other rare flora species are preserved for future generations.
