09.09.2026

A fundamental scientific work titled "Conspectus of the Flora of Azerbaijan" has been published, prepared by staff of the Institute of Botany PLE of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, with the support of the Ministry.

The 592-page publication was conceived and supervised by Professor Sayyara Ibadullayeva, Director of the Institute of Botany PLE. The editors are Tariyel Talibov and Aydin Askerov. The book was reviewed by Professor Ahmet Aksoy and Professor Elman Iskandar.

In the work, the species distributed in Azerbaijan are presented with descriptions based on the multi-volume "Flora of Azerbaijan," new discoveries, specimens held in herbarium collections, and the latest nomenclature (World Flora Online; APG I-IV). Their distribution across botanical-geographical regions is recorded according to a new division. The new conspectus of the flora of Azerbaijan comprises 159 families, 1,089 genera, and 5,076 species. The book covers the diversity and botanical-geographical distribution of Azerbaijan's flora, binomial names based on both former and new nomenclature, plants introduced to the country, and the authorities of Latin plant names. It also provides information on Azerbaijan's phytogeographical regions and their characteristic plants, lists the syntaxonomic plant communities of all families belonging to the division, class, and order, and even covers lower ranks (species, subspecies, variety, etc.). The work includes all of Azerbaijan's higher spore-bearing plants, gymnosperms, and angiosperms, as well as fruit or agricultural plants that have become naturalized in landscapes and are frequently planted along roadsides.

"Conspectus of the Flora of Azerbaijan" will be used in the future as one of the main sources for preparing a new edition of the multi-volume "Flora of Azerbaijan." It will also serve as a useful scientific resource for studying plant diversity, training young botanists, and helping people learn to identify plants.
