| Basic scientific achievements | Doctor of biological sciences A. Askarovs researches related to the systematic, florogenesis and preservation issues of genetic fund of high plants of Azerbaijan and also Caucasus. A. Askarov studied monographic higher spore-bearing plants of Caucasus, worked out interspecific systematic, have been discovered 10 new species for science, 2 new genera and 20 new species for the Caucasus and 2 new genera, 12 new species for the flora of Azerbaijan. A. Askarov brought innovation to the theory of florogenesis and has determined genesis and formation ways of Caucasus pteridoflor. These results was published as 12 articles in prestigious journals of Russia and as monograph "Paporotniki Caucasus" (Science, 2001). A. Asgarov analyzed the flora of Azerbaijan through scientific expeditions and systematic research methods and authored the three-volume monograph Higher Plants of Azerbaijan (ELM, 2005–2008). The results of more than 60 years of research on the flora of Azerbaijan are reflected in his monographs Synopsis of the Azerbaijani Flora (Science, 2011), Plant World of Azerbaijan (2016), and Orchids of the Azerbaijani Flora (Orchidaceae), in which 51 families, 242 genera, and 928 species were added to the flora of Azerbaijan. Being the co-author of "The Red Book of Azerbaijan" and " The Red Book of Russia" A. Askarov give the characteristics of 36 rare species. A. Asgarov described 80 rare species included in all three editions of the Red Book of Azerbaijan (1989, 2013, 2023) as well as in the Red Book of Russia. He served as the project manager of a grant competition of the Science Development Foundation under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan (2012), the chief taxonomist of the Millennium Seed Bank International five-year project (England), and one of the principal authors of the projects Flora of Karabakh (2024) and Compendium of the Flora of Azerbaijan (2025–2026) at the Institute of Botany of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan. He conducted monographic studies on endemic species, nomenclatural types, and the genus Astragalus within the flora of Azerbaijan. | |
