Valida Alizade, Director of the Institute of Botany of ANAS, corresponding member of ANAS was elected academician of ANAS in the elections to the membership of ANAS on May 02, 2017.
Valida Movsum gizi Alizade was born in Baku in 1946. Graduated from Azerbaijan State University department of biology in 1968.
Defended PhD thesis in 1974 (Moscow), doctoral thesis in 1994 (Baku), was elected corresponding member of ANAS in 2014.
She functioned as a head lab assistant at Azerbaijan AS Institute of Botany in 1971-1973, junior researcher (1973-1980), a senior researcher (1980-1994), a leading researcher (1994-1995), and a chief department since 1995. Worked as a deputy director of science at the Institute of Botany of ANAS in 1996-2011, since 2011 is a director of the very institute.
Key research object of the scientist is to study formation of plants under environmental stress conditions, cellular and molecular mechanisms of resistance, role of some species of the flora in bioindication of environmental pollution and remediation, environmental physiology of the plants etc. In the last decade, great strides have been obtained in studying of biodiversity of endemic and rare flora in the Caucasus, analyzing of plant species, evaluating their status in accordance with criteria and category, as well as maintaining methods. In 2013, as editor in charge Valida Alizade has published "The Red Book of rare and endangered plants and fungi of Azerbaijan" in the 2nd edition. Her research works are known both in the country and abroad.
Since 1998 actively participated in various international scientific programs and been national coordinator of the foreign counterparts and took part in joint scientific projects. She is the author of nearly 200 scientific works, including 2 inventions.
Scientist supervised to 5 PhDs and a doctor of sciences.
In 1994 V.Alizade was defined member of Defense Council, operating to the Institute of Botany, and a chairman in 2009-2010 and 2015-2016. Scientist has been a member of editorial-board of “ANAS News journal (biological sciences)” in 1994-2000 and 2010, also member of Expert Council on Biological Sciences of the Higher Attestation Commission under President of Azerbaijan Republic in 1997-2002. Since 2010, she is a member of National Committee of Azerbaijan for "Bioethics, Ethics of Science and Technology" (UNESCO), iand in 2013 a member of Department of Biological and Medical Sciences of ANAS. Since 1996 Valida Alizade is a member of Azerbaijan Botanists Society and Russian and Azerbaijani communities of plant physiologists and biophysicians, since 2002 a member of the European Society of Plant Physiologists. In 1997-1998 and in 2015 she worked as the chairman of the state commission for examination at biology faculty of Baku State University. Scientist has been chosen a leading expert at Intergovernmental science-policy Platform (IPBES) on Biodiversity and Ecosystem for Europe and Central Asia (2015-2017).
In 1993, Valida Alizade was awarded the individual grant of International Science Foundation, the Orders of the Presidium of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences in 2005 and 2011 for her scientific, pedagogical and organizational services, and deserved to “Shohrat” order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan in 2015.
