The event devoted to the 29th anniversary of January 20 was held at the Institute of Botany of ANAS. The participants of the event commemorated the victims with a minute silence.
Academician Valida Alizade, Director of the Institute of Botany of ANAS opened the event and noted that 20th January was written as the honourable and tragical history of Azerbaijan.
On January 20, 1990 peaceful people who went out the streets as a sign of objection against the preconceived policy of the former USSR Government with regards to Azerbaijan were brutally killed. Soviet military units were brought into Baku and mass butchery event was procreated against the peaceful people. In this bloody event 146 people became martyrs and about 744 were wounded and 841 were informally arrested. Three of martyrs were the employees of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. Ogtay Mirzayev, Parvana Garakhani, Imran Babayev, Rashad Salimov and others also regarded events of January 20 as heroic history of our people.
