Young employees of the Institute of Botany, of MSE RA, PhD Ayten Fatdayeva, PhD students Asya Akbarova and Sabina Hajiyeva were on a scientific mission in Berlin, Germany.

The purpose of the visit was to participate in the molecular-phylogenetics course and conduct molecular-phylogenetic analyzes under the direction of Professor Thomas Borsch, director of the Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum of Berlin (BGBM, Germany) in the Department of Biology at the Freie Universität Berlin. During the course, young researchers conducted molecular-phylogenetic studies on species belonging to Campanula L., Teucrium L. distributed in the flora of Azerbaijan in the laboratory of the Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum of Berlin.

DNA extraction, PCR amplification, electrophoresis of leaf samples stored in silica gel belonging to Campanula and Teucrium genera species collected from different regions of Azerbaijan were carried out in laboratory conditions, and the DNA sequence was read using software according to special methodologies.

Based on chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) data, work continues to construct the most suitable phylogenetic tree with statistical confidence.

During the visit, the researchers visited the library of the Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum of Berlin, and also inspected the herbarium specimens in the herbarium fund.

At the end, presentations on the results of the mission were made at the scientific seminar by A.Fatdayeva, A. Akbarova and S.Hajiyeva at the Institute of Botany, MSE RA.
