03.06.2025

Employees of the Geobotany Department of the Institute of Botany, MSERA were on an expedition in Gakh district within the framework of the thematic plan "Study and comparative assessment of the current state of plant diversity of forest ecosystems in the Greater Caucasus (within the borders of Azerbaijan)". The goal was to study various forest massifs in the areas located at altitudes of 110-1100 m above sea level (Aghchay Ulukorpu Agchay village in the Ilisu State Nature Reserve, Mamirli waterfall in Lakit village, and the surroundings of Alibeyli, Almali, Gum and Fistigli villages).

Also, the vegetation cover around the Aghyazli steppe, the Narija pass, the Sarija steppe, the Ajinohur desert, and the Akhar-Bakhar mountain range in the Alazan-Ayrichay valley was studied.

During the study, pilot plots were established in the areas mentioned and the vegetation was described there. A list of plant species distributed in the studied forests was compiled, their phytocenotic characteristics studied, phenological observations conducted, geobotanical descriptions provided, herbarium samples taken, rare, endemic, and relict plants recorded, their photographs, as well as GPS coordinates were taken.

As a result of the research, it was determined that the dominant plants playing a role in forest formation in Gakh are hornbeam (Carpinus betulus), maple (A. pseudoplatanus), ash (Fraxinus excelsior), wingnut (Pterocarya pterocarpa), linden (Tilia caucasica).

During the return from the expedition, research was also conducted in the forests of the Aghsu Pass and several rare species were recorded.
