Nigar Mursal gizi: The information obtained as a result of the expeditions will be reflected in the book “Flora of Karabakh”, which is expected to be published soon.

-How would you characterize the flora of Azerbaijan?

-Azerbaijan is the largest country in the South Caucasus and is distinguished by the richness and diversity of its flora. More than 4,500 species of higher plants are widespread in the flora of Azerbaijan. This constitutes more than 70% of the entire flora of the Caucasus. The reason for this rich biodiversity is related to the diversity of natural and physical-geographical conditions of our republic. Such natural conditions have also led to the abundance of endemic species of flora. Currently, their number has decreased due to the open borders, tourist flow, and the influence of climatic factors. In general, the presence of 950 Caucasian endemics in our flora is an indicator of the high uniqueness of our country. The hot spots of endemism in Azerbaijan are considered to be the territories of Talish and Nakhchivan.  The natural dendroflora of our country includes 435 species of trees and shrubs in 48 families and 135 genera. Of these, 119 species are trees and 316 shrubs. There are more than 70 species of endemic plants, which is 16 percent of the dendroflora of the republic.

The flora of Azerbaijan includes up to 500 food, up to 1,600 medicinal, up to 800 aromatic, more than 150 technical, and more than 1,500 dye plants.
