The March 31 – Day of Genocide of Azerbaijanis was commemorated at the Institute of Botany PLE.
Acting Director Professor Sayyara Ibadullayeva stated that in March–April 1918, massacres of Azerbaijanis were carried out by Armenian-Dashnak armed groups not only in Baku but also in Shamakhi, Guba districts, Karabakh, Zangezur, Nakhchivan, Lankaran, Ganja, and other regions. Tens of thousands of civilians were brutally killed based on their ethnic and religious identity, and cultural monuments, historical buildings, and mosques were destroyed.
She noted that due to historical circumstances, it was not possible to give an objective assessment of these events for nearly two centuries. By the decree of National Leader Heydar Aliyev dated March 26, 1998, March 31 was declared the Day of Genocide of Azerbaijanis. Thanks to the attention of President Ilham Aliyev, extensive research has been conducted, revealing new facts about the crimes committed.
At the event, Associate Professor Sadig Garayev (PhD in Biology) described the March genocide as one of the bloodiest tragedies in Azerbaijani history and emphasized the importance of national unity to prevent such events from recurring.
At the end, a documentary film reflecting the tragic events was screened.
