Field research was conducted by the Geobotany Laboratory of the Institute of Botany PLE in the Shirvan plain, including areas of Hajigabul, part of Kurdamir, as well as coastal zones of Salyan and Garadagh.
The purpose of the expedition was to inventory the vegetation cover of the Shirvan plain in accordance with the thematic plan. As a result of geobotanical descriptions, five vegetation types were identified: desert, semi-desert, wetland, shrub, and meadow.
Saline semi-shrub and annual desert vegetation were observed in Kurdamir and Salyan, while wetland and meadow vegetation were classified as intrazonal. Wormwood semi-deserts were identified as dominant zonal vegetation in Shirvan and Hajigabul regions.
The discovery of dry remains of the hydrophyte Zostera at a distance of 150–200 meters from the sea indicates the retreat of seawater.
