Another scientific study reflecting the rich flora of Karabakh, co-authored by researchers of the Institute of Botany PLE under the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, has been published in the prestigious Pakistan Journal of Botany.
Within the framework of the research, the current status of genera and species belonging to the sedge family (Cyperaceae Juss.) distributed in Karabakh was comprehensively studied. Based on geobotanical and floristic methods, it was determined that 12 genera and 31 species of this family are present in the wetland vegetation of the lowland areas of Karabakh.
The researchers also clarified the ecological structure of the region, identifying 4 formation classes, 4 formations, and 8 associations. Using GPS coordinates collected during expeditions organized along specific routes, digital maps (GIS maps) illustrating species distribution areas and movement routes were developed with the ArcGIS Pro 3.3 software.
It was established that sedges (Carex sp.), which are characteristic of the lowland areas of the region, are the dominant species in this ecosystem.
These scientific findings are of great importance for the conservation of biodiversity in the wild flora of Karabakh and for presenting the region’s botanical potential to the global scientific community.
