02.06.2026

Researchers from the Laboratory for the Organization and Digitization of the Herbarium Collection of the Institute of Botany PLE under the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan carried out extensive field studies in the western and northwestern regions of Azerbaijan, covering the districts of Ganja, Goygol, Agstafa, and Zagatala. The main objectives of the expeditions were to investigate the spring flora, enrich the Herbarium Collection, monitor rare and endemic plant species, and study plant diversity across various ecosystems.

The first stage of the research was conducted in and around the city of Ganja, including Goygol, Hajikend, Togana, Maralgol, the Eldar Pine State Nature Reserve, as well as Gulur Mountain and the village of Tatli in the Agstafa district. Monitoring activities were carried out in different ecosystems, plant specimens were collected, species distribution areas were identified, and GPS coordinates were recorded.

The subsequent expedition covered various natural landscapes of the Zagatala district. Research was conducted in the Zagatala State Nature Reserve and in the areas of Gabizdara, the surroundings of the Katekh River, Mukhakh, Ashagi Tala, Mazikh, Jar, Kebeloba, Akhakhdara, and Tarikhlar villages. The rich forest ecosystems and foothill areas of the region were investigated to assess floral diversity and monitor rare plant species.

During the expeditions, numerous plant specimens belonging to the families Orchidaceae, Iridaceae, Rosaceae, Lamiaceae, Asteraceae, Ranunculaceae, Fabaceae, and others were collected, identified, and prepared as herbarium specimens. A total of 210 herbarium specimens representing 13 families, 34 genera, and 68 species were collected from the Ganja, Goygol, and Agstafa districts. In the Zagatala district, 195 herbarium specimens representing 23 families and 65 species were collected.
