A number of medicinal plants are used in Azerbaijani folk medicine for the treatment of atherosclerosis.
Professor Sayyara Ibadullayeva, acting director of the Institute of Botany PLE of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, stated that calamus (Acorus calamus L.), Jacob's ladder (Polemonium caeruleum L.), common quince (Cydonia oblonga Mill), and sea onion – anzur (Allium oreoprasum Schrenk.) have been widely used for this purpose in folk medicine.
According to her speech, a powder prepared from the rhizome of calamus has been applied for memory loss and weakened vision and hearing. It is noted that an infusion made from the root of Jacob's ladder has been used to lower blood cholesterol levels, regulate the functioning of the nervous system, and improve the functional condition of blood vessels. The professor stated that the fruit of common quince, rich in phytoncides, has been considered beneficial for headaches and vascular spasms associated with atherosclerosis. Sea onion – anzur has, since ancient times, been applied in various forms for conditions such as dizziness, forgetfulness, hand tremors, and weakened vision.
