In accordance with the Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev dated April 9, 2018, the date of March 27 was defined as "Science Day" - a professional holiday of those engaged in scientific activities in the republic. The establishment of the "Science Day" is a manifestation of the exceptional care of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev about science and the high importance he attaches to scientists.

In accordance with the resolution of the UN General Assembly, November 10 is celebrated in a number of countries as the World Science Day for Peace and Development. In addition, in the USA, Great Britain, Italy, Russia, Ukraine, India, Kazakhstan, Iran and other countries, various dates of particular importance from the point of view of scientific development, such as days and weeks of national science, are also celebrated.

The definition of March 27 as "Science Day" in Azerbaijan is due to the exceptional role that the Academy of Sciences has played in the socio-economic, cultural and spiritual progress of our people for a hundred years. The Academy of Sciences, founded in March 1945, rendered special services in the formation of the intellectual potential of the Azerbaijani people, the definition of strategic directions of science arising from the requirements of the time, the development of fundamental and applied science.

National leader Heydar Aliyev called the Academy "The national treasure of the Azerbaijani people." Such a high value is due to the fact that the spiritual and intellectual energy radiated by this temple of science has stimulated our national culture as a whole for many decades. The formation of modern Azerbaijani culture, the ideology of national statehood and Azerbaijanism, the education of the national intellectual elite in recent decades has become possible as a result of the activities of the Academy. In particular, the authoritative scientific schools established in Azerbaijan in the 70-80-ies of the last century gave an impetus to the development of scientific processes not only on the scale of the former USSR, but also on a global scale.

At present, on the one hand, in accordance with the global challenges caused by the new realities of the world and on the other hand, the new realities that have developed in the region and in the country after the historic victory of Azerbaijan, Azerbaijani science, its main leading center - the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, continues its development. Now time has set completely new tasks for Azerbaijani science. The aim of the Academy in the near future is to actively participate in the implementation of the state policy defined by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and aimed at the comprehensive development of the country. The sensitive and caring attitude of the Azerbaijani state to science and purposeful reforms in the field of scientific activity give every reason to confidently move towards this goal.

We believe and hope that the scientific potential of Azerbaijan, on the one hand, thanks to the attention and care of the state about science and on the other- thanks to its internal intellectual mobilization, will be more organized consolidated in terms of the requirements of the new time and will continue to take an active part in the socio-economic, cultural and spiritual development of the republic and he will also make a worthy contribution to world science.
