A seminar on “Application of Geographic Information Systems in biodiversity research” was organized by the Council of Young Scientists and Specialists at the Institute of Botany of ANAS.
Yusif Abiyev, a researcher at the Systematics and Biodiversity Department of the Institute, gave information about the general concepts of GIS technologies, working principles, software and hardware, and said that this methodology is widely used in biodiversity, botany and forestry around the world. The creation of plant population maps and an electronic database using GIS technologyis envisaged in the new edition of the “Red Book” of Azerbaijan.
He stressed the importance of electronic maps in all ecosystem research and spoke about the use of appropriate tools in field expeditions, possible databases and methods of conducting new analytical analyzes in accordance with the field of botany.
At the end, discussions were held on relevant topics, and trainings were consideredon ArcGIS software for young scientists of the Institute.
