A commemorative event was held at the Institute of Botany on March 31 - the Day of the Genocide of Azerbaijanis

Today, March 31 - Day of Genocide of Azerbaijanis was commemorated at the Institute of Botany of ANAS. At the online event, first the victims of the genocide with a minute of silence was commemorated.

Speaking at the event, Director General of the Institute, Dr. Professor Sayyara Ibadullayeva said that the March 1918 genocide was one of the bloodiest tragedies not only in the history of Azerbaijan, but also in the history of mankind due to its cruelty and scale. Taking advantage of the opportunity, Armenians killed thousands of people, including children, the elderly and women, with swords and burned them alive. They destroyed the pearls of national architecture, schools, hospitals, mosques and other monuments. They turned a large part of Baku into ruins. The genocide of Azerbaijanis was carried out with special cruelty not only in Baku, but also in Shamakhi, Guba, Karabakh, Zangazur, Nakhchivan, Lankaran, Ganja and other regions. In these areas, civilians were massacred, towns and villages were burned, and national cultural monuments were destroyed. It was noted that on March 26, 1998, National Leader Heydar Aliyev signed a decree on the genocide of Azerbaijanis. Since that day, March 31 has been marked as the Day of Genocide of Azerbaijanis. Thanks to the attention of President Ilham Aliyev, extensive research has been conducted on the 1918 genocide, new facts about crimes committed by Armenian nationalists were revealed, and a mass grave of Azerbaijanis was discovered in Guba.

The event was attended by executive director, Dr. Shakir Gasimov, Dr. Eldar Novruzov, Dr., professor Aydin Asgarov, Dr. Khuraman Khalilova, Dr. Dilzara Agayeva, Dr. Naiba Mehdiyeva, Ph.D. Aladdin Gadimov, Ph.D. Rashad Salimov who they described the March genocide as one of the bloodiest tragedies in the history of the Azerbaijani people, stressed the importance of forming a strong national memory in present and future generations and demonstrating national unity so that such cases do not happen again.
